Connie Maoshan, "Choizai the Sailor Cat"

Choi Zai the Sailor Cat is a picture book by Hong Kong illustrator Maoshan Connie, inspired by stories of a cat that once lived at Hong Kong's ferry pier. It tells the story of Choi Zai, an 11-year-old cat who collects people's worries and complaints and turns them into sea mist using a milk frother, along with his beloved kind captain, the expressive mists, and the various Hong Kong cityscapes visible from the ferry. The story, with its gentle touch yet astonishingly detailed illustrations by the artist, greatly expands the imagination for things unknowingly forgotten or overlooked in our hectic daily lives. All the Japanese translation text was also done by the artist herself. It is a humorous and objective story that only she, who loves animals and nature, and has depicted cities through community map-making, could create.
This first translated book by an artist who already has many readers in Hong Kong is published by Kuma Shoten, a new venture launched by editor Chinatsu Kuma, who has brought many art books to the world. Designed by Tatsuya Ariyama and Ariyama Design Store, it is a new picture book, cat book, and Hong Kong book, with the special appearance of an art book.
