Everyday Memory Maps: Horikawa, Omiya, and Senbon in the 1950s-1970s

Even if people live in the same era and region, they each live in their own unique world. "Everyday Memory Map: Horikawa, Omiya, Senbon Edition 1950s-1970s" is a collection of childhood memories of the area around Daitoku-ji Temple, about a 15-minute walk from the intersection of Horikawa, Omiya, and Senbon streets with Kitaoji-dori. It was an endeavor by Takayuki Mitsushima (artist/Atelier Mitsushima) to interview two other people about their childhood memories of the area using an "everyday memory map," asking them about other children and aspects of the region they couldn't have known at the time, and to re-experience their "perspectives."
Not only their own places and landscapes, but also memories of intersecting places such as kindergartens, markets, and cafes were shared. It evokes an image of a bustling shopping street thriving with industries such as Nishijin weaving.

This is the Horikawa, Omiya, and Senbon edition of Kyoto from the "Everyday Memory Map," a method developed by Ayako Sato for eliciting "memories of place." It contains memories of place from three individuals who lived in these three areas, all quite close to our shop, from the 1950s to the 1970s.
This exhibition was originally planned for the "Beside the Gaze" exhibition held in 2023 at Atelier Mitsushima, a gallery near Daitoku-ji Temple. Afterwards, it was also featured as a permanent exhibition at "Tsuratti Senbon" and an exhibition at our shop. People who were born and raised in the same area and still live there, people who moved to this place, and people who come carrying memories of this town from the past. The limited "memories of place" of just these three individuals on display inspired visitors to recall their own memories of this land and places within their memories.
This is a leaflet version, extracting "memories of place" that were exhibited in the main exhibition. From the memories of this place more than half a century ago, different perspectives on the same town, things that once existed but are now gone, and things that remain unchanged emerge.
