Map of Everyday Memories: Nagano Edition 1950s-2020s

Remembering places, depicting landscapes, walking through the past, layering memories, accessing the history of a place.

This is the Nagano edition of "Everyday Memory Map," developed by Ayako Sato as a method to evoke "place memories."
As part of an exhibition at the Nagano Prefectural Art Museum, it includes memories from nine people who knew Nagano City from the 1950s to the 2000s, "Your Place Memories" collected from exhibition visitors, records of "people who walked through Nagano" such as Masuo Ikeda and Kozo Yokoi, unearthed from people's memories and local historical materials, and texts by photographer Yu Shinoda and curator Masashi Matsui reflecting on the production process, Sato's own thoughts through the project, and memories of the Nagano Prefectural Shinano Museum of Art, the predecessor to the current museum, which was demolished in 2017.
It reveals that because Nagano is a relatively small city compared to other regions, with places like Zenko-ji Temple, Joyama Park, the Gondo shopping street, numerous cinemas, bookstores, and art supply stores, there are places commonly remembered across eras and generations, making it easy to encounter countless people from the past who walked the same paths at different times. This "Everyday Memory Map" by Sato, who approached the memories of the city/places with meticulous research and high resolution after consulting extensive materials, vividly portrays 70 years of Nagano City's memories.
