Ryūhei Yokoyama "SCRAP COUNTERPOINT"

A journey exploring the question, "What is photography?" and the origins of my own limitations.

Ryuhei Yokoyama, a photographer who develops works primarily through monochrome film street snapshots under the theme "What is a city?", is releasing a collection of "recorded words"—an unedited, raw statement collection born from the process of creation and publication—as a publication by our store.

This zine is a collection of statements, compiled as a small scrapbook, featuring words that are part of the artist's output and a major element of creation, yet lack a definitive form. These words, jotted down on scraps of paper and in cell phones, represent the origins and initial impulses of creation, as well as associations and conversations that would normally be trimmed down or sometimes reshaped during the process of creating and presenting a work. Beyond these process-related thoughts, specific references to artists and works that served as inspiration for the photographer—such as Godard, Keith Richards, Kerouac, 'Stand by Me,' 'AKIRA,' Reich, and Jonny Greenwood—not only facilitate an understanding of artist Ryuhei Yokoyama and his artistic world but also, like Yokoyama himself who has been influenced by expressions across genres including books, films, music, and art, transcend the medium of photography. These references offer hints for new creation and artistic endeavors to many people dedicated to art and creation, encouraging an inward journey to explore their own origins.

The cover was designed by Ryuhei Yokoyama himself. The artwork, a brown rat accidentally photographed during a street photography session, is striking. This is the first publication by Yohasha / NAGORO BOOKS.
